Physical and biochemical interactions between peripheral components are important to both tumor biology and cancer-associated pain.
Infiltration and juxtaposition of tumor cells (DsRed2-transfected fibrosarcoma cells) with pain fibers (blue) and blood vessels (green) in the hind-paw of a mouse were captured using single-and multi-photon laser scanning microscopy. (whole foot-4x montage, large circle-100X, small circle 600X)

A novel system for simultaneous in vivo tracking and biological assessment of leukemia cells and leukemia-reactive cytotoxic T-cells (CTLs). Three weeks after injection, metastatic leukemic blasts (DsRed2 transfected acute myelogenous leukemia C1498 cells) can be readily identified in the colon of a B6 mouse. Leukemia cell deposits of 100-200 cells can be easily detected using laser scanning confocal microscopy.



The stem cell region of human scalp hair is richly innervated. Projection of 100 one-micron optical sections of the putative stem cell region of an anagen scalp hair follicle using laser scanning confocal microscopy. 4mm punch biopsy samples from human scalp was sectioned vertically into thick 200-micron sections. The sample was immunostained with antibodies to a pan-neuronal marker PGP9.5 (green) and neuropeptide CGRP (red) and the vessels are labeled with FITC-conjugated plant lectin (blue).
