Physical and biochemical interactions between peripheral components are important to both tumor biology and cancer-associated pain.
Infiltration and juxtaposition of tumor cells (DsRed2-transfected fibrosarcoma cells) with pain fibers (blue) and blood vessels (green) in the hind-paw of a mouse were captured using single-and multi-photon laser scanning microscopy. (whole foot-4x montage, large circle-100X, small circle 600X)

A novel system for simultaneous in vivo tracking and biological assessment of leukemia cells and leukemia-reactive cytotoxic T-cells (CTLs). Three weeks after injection, metastatic leukemic blasts (DsRed2 transfected acute myelogenous leukemia C1498 cells) can be readily identified in the colon of a B6 mouse. Leukemia cell deposits of 100-200 cells can be easily detected using laser scanning confocal microscopy.

The stem cell region of human scalp hair is richly innervated. Projection of 100 one-micron optical sections of the putative stem cell region of an anagen scalp hair follicle using laser scanning confocal microscopy. 4mm punch biopsy samples from human scalp was sectioned vertically into thick 200-micron sections. The sample was immunostained with antibodies to a pan-neuronal marker PGP9.5 (green) and neuropeptide CGRP (red) and the vessels are labeled with FITC-conjugated plant lectin (blue).

The Ericson Lab will soon be moving to it's new home in the VWF building.

On May 14th, 2010 Marna will be speaking at the Advanced Pediatric Dermatology conference on emerging tick-borne Diseases. She will be giving her presentation at 9:20 in the Mayo Memorial Auditorium at the University of Minnesota East Bank Campus Minneapolis, Minnesota.

On Wednesday, April 14th, 2010, in conjunction with Evening Grand Rounds, we will be celebrating and showcasing the clinical and the basic science research activities of the University of Minnesota's Department of Dermatology

December, 9th-13th 2009- Marna will be in attendance of the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

July 22nd 2010 - The Journal of the American society of hematology Blood Published a picture taken by Marna on the cover of their magazine.
Her article "Pain-related behaviors and neurochemical alterations in mice expressing sickle hemoglobin: modulation by cannabinoids" was published in the same issue.

March 29th 2010 - The Ericson Lab Began an art project with Nancy Ann Coyne to explore the nature of art and science.

May 14th 2010 - Marna gave a lecture at the Advanced Pediatric Dermatology Conference. Her talk covered Emerging Tick-Borne Diseases.

December, 9th-13th 2009- Marna attended the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

November 5th 2009- Marna gave a lecture in Translational research in Dermatology.

November 2nd 2009- Marna attended the MIMTeC (Minimally Invasive Medical Technologies Center)in cooperation with Nanocopiea and the University of Cincinnati.

September 21st 2009- Marna will be presenting a poster at the 6th annual Women's Health Research Conference at the Macnamara Center. 12:00pm-5:30pm

Marna Ericson, Ph.D. - P.I.
Dr. Ericson joined the University of Minnesota Department of Dermatology in 1996 as part of the Clinical Research Division team. She is director of the research laboratory in Dermatology located in Diehl Hall and leads the Basic Science Fridays resident lecture series.

Her interests lie in imaging with special emphasis on single- and multi-photon laser scanning confocal microscopy. Her expertise in imaging has led to fruitful collaborations with other investigators outside the Department of Dermatology in the fields of infectious diseases, oncology, neuroscience, rheumatology, engineering, dentistry, and orthopedics.

Current research activities include cancer pain in a murine model, mechanisms of hair growth, tumor/T-cell interactions, mechanism of mammalian/tick infection, and second harmonic imaging of collagen.

A senior at Bethel College MN, Breanna joined the Ericson lab in the summer of 2009 as part of the National Science Foundations Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (REU.)

Carrie McShane - Research Fellow
Carrie joined the department in 2007 as a histology technician and researcher.

Her latest project is a collaboration with Nanocopoeia, Inc to determine the penetration of Rhodamine nanoparticles into the skin as compared with traditional formulations. Nanoparticles will be produced using the ElectronanosprayTM process and will be captured on PVA strips. The PVA strips and controls will be placed onto mouse skin. Penetration of particles will be analyzed by fluorescence microscopy. This pilot study will allow future development of other transdermal drugs, such as acne antibiotics. Her expertise lies in tissue preparation, H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, and confocal microscopy. Additionally, she has training and experience in primary investigator responsibilities such as aquiring IRB approval and grant writing.

Carrie received her B.A. in music at St. Olaf College where she was an active harpist and percussionist. Currently, she attends St. George’s University Medical School in Grenada, West Indies. She is active in the Women in Medicine organization and Surgery Club on campus. Also, she is very interested in tropical dermatology and is working on forming a Dermatology Club to screen for skin cancer. She looks forward to traveling abroad next summer to promote public health.
